Why use e-learning?

Potential Pros for e-Learning:

  • Students and teachers spend less time commuting to class
  • Students and teachers have less travel costs
  • Students can maintain a job while they take courses
  • Students can learn when they need it (Just-In-Time)
  • Learning options are not constrained by geographic location
  • Pace of learning can be individualised
  • Can be more effective for some learners (shy, reflective, language challenged, those needing  more time)
  • Can offer more student to student interaction
  • Can be more focused on the learner and less on the teacher
  • Instruction can be more customized and flexible
  • Side benefits of learning new technologies and technical skills

Potential Cons against e-Learning:

  • Teachers need to learn to be effective online teachers
  • More time consuming for teachers to provide individualized feedback
  • Equipment needs of students and learning providers
  • Technical training and support of learners and teachers
  • Lack of face to face interaction
  • Equity of access to learners of all backgrounds and parts of society
  • Requires new skills and responsibilities from learners
  • Does not provide many social aspects of a campus or traditional classroom

When you might use e-Learning…

You might consider using e-Learning if:

  • you have courses which might be of interest to people in the workforce
  • your organisation wants to use a wider range of teaching and learning approaches
  • your organization wants to improve access to education and training for a particular group or location
  • you want to give students options to progress at their own pace

e-Learning may not be appropriate when:

  • teachers and students do not have the technology skills needed to participate effectively
  • the organisation is unable to provide technical or learning support for teachers and staff
  • face-to face interaction is an essential element of learning
