What do I need to know?

As an experienced manager, technologist or trained teacher, you already have much of the knowledge and  skills required to move into an e-learning environment. To take the next step it will help to understand how the introduction of e-learning could affect you in your role, and what new skills and knowledge you might need.

For teachers...

Perhaps the most important difference for teachers in the e-learning environment is the way you see your role in a learning situation.

Using e-learning I find I’m less involved in delivering subject matter or content. I tend to be more involved in providing and facilitating learning environments. I see less of my students, but I’m more involved with individuals and groups who move through the course at their own pace.

Working with the new tools and methods I need to be able to choose from a range of traditional and new approaches to provide the most appropriate experiences for my students. Online learners have more responsibility for their learning, and I tend to spend more time providing resources than delivering content.

For managers...

It's important for you to have a good understanding of how the teacher's role is likely to change, since this could have a major effect on your organisation and could cause some issues. So our advice is to take part alongside your teaching staff in any professional development activities related to elearning.

In addition, kete 5 has special significance for managers since it deals with the support systems your organisation will need to have in place for elearning to be effective.

For IT specialists...

It's important for you to have a good understanding of how the teacher's role is likely to change, since this could have a major effect on your own role and what is required of you. So our advice is to take part alongside the teaching staff in any professional development activities related to elearning.
