Moana

Moana: When we first started talking about e-learning, some of our teachers thought that they'd be replaced or that their teaching load would be lower. But as we got the professional development underway, they've realised that it's more about their role changing.

The e-learning approach we've taken is less focussed on the teacher as an expert or source of knowledge, more as a facilitator, someone who guides learners. This is not always easy for teachers to come to grips with! But we see it as essential if we are to make e-learning succeed.

More importantly, this change in the role of teachers is something we would want to do anyway, even if we weren't moving into e-learning.

So as well as providing more flexibility for learners, e-learning can be a catalyst for improving learning, making it more student-centred. The changed role of the teacher is an integral part of a broader change in the way learning takes place.
